The Economic Crises in Rhyme and Perspective

Earlier this month I was charged with putting our current economic crises in perspective for a group of financial leaders. They had just sat through several days of dour projections and were about to return home to share the “News” with their employees. With that in mind I decided to wrap the same forecast in a package of rhyme and humor. This is not to diminish the severity of our current economic situation but to add the light of our ability to overcome by maintaining our perspective. We are never upset by what happens to us, but by the story we tell ourselves about the experience. I find this seussical rhythm to be a direct link to the optimism of our youth so please read this out loud or better yet in a group. If a chuckle, giggle or even all out laugh might arise let it remind you that this is the way is supposed to be.

The economy is uncertain
GDP is getting worse
And the length of recession
Makes you just want to curse

Unemployment is growing
And the inverse for wealth
All of this bad news
Can’t be good for my health

Despite all these predictions
And regardless of trends
What you believe in your heart
Is the means to the ends

If you believe in disaster
That is what you will find;
What you create in your world
Begins in your mind

Through all the recessions
The purpose remains
Leverage trust from your members
To find the most gains

Start with your team
Keep your mission in sight -
With clear goals in mind
You drive toward the light

Be bold in your actions
Not timid or tame;
If you are not proud to be special
You’re just more of the same

So lift up your heads
Put a smile on your face
It is your time to win
So get back in the race
